With 17 years of service and leadership in four different councils of varying sizes and markets, I have worked in all areas of council management and operations. This has included staff development and leadership, fundraising and fiscal management, membership growth and retention, camp program enhancements/capital project execution, strategic planning, board recruitment, volunteer and community relations, and communicating with all levels within the organization.

Scout Executive – Sagamore Council, Kokomo, IN April 2012 – present

I have had the pleasure of working with engaged board members and volunteers to greatly impact the Scouting program throughout 16 counties in North Central Indiana. During these past 4+ years, our focus has been quality programming at all levels, membership growth and retention, strong fiscal management and sound board governance.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Guided the council’s strategic plan process and score card to align council stakeholders and resources to meet annual benchmarks. 
  • Worked with donors and the Executive Board to reduce operating debt by 84%. ($327,844 to $55,012)
  • Increased endowment from $2.459 million (2012) to $4.365 million (2016). In addition $575,000 in asks were made in 2016.
  • Increased unrestricted net assets from $771 to $35,620. 
  • Increased contributions from foundations and trusts from $14,000 (2012) to $96,000 (2016).
  • 100% increase in special event revenue.
  • Increased popcorn sales while returning more money to units.
  • Managed and coached 15 staff members to support council volunteers and serve more youth in 16 counties.
  • Identified and invested in staff talents to meet council’s strategic objectives.
  • Increased council summer camp attendance along with off-season camp facility rentals resulting in financially-sustainable council camping properties.
  • Completed capital improvement projects valued at one-million dollars during tenure in accordance with the council strategic plan. These projects include a new swimming pool; a new central shower house; technology enhancements; office improvement; equipment purchases.
  • Cultivated and recruited key individuals to join the Executive Board. With nominating committee, developed a succession plan for the next six years of Board leadership.
  • Established rapport with top community influencers and organizations to elevate Scouting in the community.
  • Worked with volunteers to develop and implement an effective council marketing and communications strategy.
  • Coordinated Scouting's response to natural disasters (multiple communities.)
  • Since June 2015, one of two Alpha Councils and subsequent Beta Tester for the new online membership application for the National Service Center.

Sr. Development Director – Black Warrior Council, Tuscaloosa, AL Dec. 2009 - April 2012

Provided leadership to field and office staff in all areas of council finance and program resulting in sound financial stewardship and quality program experiences for the youth of West Alabama. I had specific responsibilities to the VP of Program, Camping Committee, Finance Committee, Land and Properties Committee and managed all council special events. I successfully completed Senior Leadership Essentials I and II in 2011.

Program Director – Black Warrior Council, Tuscaloosa, AL Feb. 2008 – Dec. 2009

Managed and provided leadership to all aspects of council programming. I was responsible for adding new program areas to camp including climbing, horsemanship, veterinary science, animal science, and expanded shooting sports facilities. I worked with volunteers to change the format of Cub Scout Resident Camp and experienced a 46% increase in attendance. Worked with VP Program, Camping Chairman, Land and Properties Committee and supervised two Camp Rangers and Council Registrar.

Field Director – Circle Ten Council, Dallas, TX Aug. 2005 – Feb. 2008

Provided leadership to seven professionals with the primary responsibility to recruit quality, diverse volunteer leadership and to achieve successful outcomes per the council’s strategic plan. I worked with the council finance team on multiple special events including Whitney M. Young awards dinner, sporting clays, golf tournament, bass tournament and Learning for Life Distinguished Educator Luncheon. 

District Director – Circle Ten Council, Dallas, TX Jan. 2003 – Aug. 2005

Provided direct supervision to one district executive and managed summer camping operations at Clements Scout Ranch. Recruited quality leadership in key district committee positions who eventually became executive board members. All finance, membership and program objectives were successfully achieved during tenure.

District Executive – Chickasaw Council, Memphis, TN Jan. 2000 – Dec. 2002

Provided leadership to a newly-formed district.  Recruited board-caliber leadership into district positions and committees, and obtained Quality District status within the first year. All finance, membership and program objectives were successfully achieved during tenure.

National & Regional Assignments

  •  Current Program Chair for the 2017 Central Region All Hands Conference.
  • With my wife Jennifer, Chaired Spouses program for the 2016 National Top Hands Conference in New Orleans.

EDUCATION

I graduated from Auburn University (Auburn, AL) in December 1999 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a Human Resources emphasis.
